Animal Care

Another area of change in all phases of production animal agriculture is in the area of animal health and well-being.  As all livestock disciplines have moved toward larger numbers and increased confinement, there has been an increased focus and concern over how animals are treated in these new and larger systems.  Certainly we are all aware of the bad press that has come from cases of neglect or abuse in the livestock industry.

Supreme animal care is a bedrock belief in our approach, and we wholeheartedly support the efforts of our industry to educate not only consumers but producers alike in the area of animal health and welfare.  While we don’t deny that there have been real documented cases of animal abuse in our industry, we are quick to argue that it is an extreme exception rather than the rule.  Those rare cases of real abuse aside, the real problem is more one of perception than anything else.  The fact is that when outside observers look at much of what we do and take for granted in caring for our animals, it is easy to misunderstand the truth about what is really happening.  We can help you and your workforce see your farm through “consumer eyes” and avoid unwarranted and mistaken negative impressions.

The National Dairy FARM Program:  Farmers Assuring Responsible Management™ is a nation-wide program designed to demonstrate and verify that dairy producers are committed to providing the highest standards of animal care.  We support that program, and stand ready to help cooperatives and/or individual producers in their efforts to insure compliance and enhance marketing opportunities both locally and internationally.
